Trusting the Struggle: A Personal Journey of Faith and Growth

Heather Garner

Having faith when everything seems to be falling apart is tough. Really, really tough. It’s the moment when you’re grasping for answers, feeling like the world is crumbling beneath your feet. But what if this moment—this painful, confusing, frustrating transition—is actually a sign? A sign that something bigger is on its way. Something more aligned with your purpose.

It’s nearly impossible to see the pieces falling into place when it feels like they’re breaking apart. But in reality, it’s God, your higher self, the universe—whatever name you give to that divine force—redirecting you. Stopping you from settling into what is comfortable and guiding you toward what was always meant for you.

Lessons from the Path: My Journey Through Spain

I came to truly understand this while hiking across Spain for a month. Disconnected from my routines, stripped of the distractions that had been so deeply ingrained in me, I spent that time in deep reflection—studying the patterns of my life, tracing them back as far as I could remember.

And the truth revealed itself, again and again. Every time I thought life was working against me, it was actually working for me.

Even the job I didn’t want to take but felt obligated to—it turned into a stepping stone for a long career that I loved. Every painful ending, every door that slammed shut, every situation that made no sense at the time—it all fit into a larger plan that I couldn’t yet see.

The “Icky” Stage: The Space Between What Was and What’s Coming

There is always a stage of discomfort—that in-between phase where you feel lost, stuck, and uncertain. It’s the pruning before the growth.

Think of a tree. To an outsider, pruning looks brutal—branches cut away, leaving the tree looking bare and broken. But to the gardener, this process is essential. It removes the small, unnecessary branches that drain energy from the tree’s real growth.

That’s what’s happening in our lives when relationships end, jobs disappear, or we feel stuck in a never-ending struggle. We are being pruned. We are being prepared for something stronger, fuller, and more aligned.

But while we’re in it? It feels like hell.

The Seed That Struggles Before It Blooms

Another way to look at it is this: You planted a seed. Maybe it was a dream, a goal, a life you imagined for yourself. But before that seed can grow, it has to break open.

Right now, you may still be underground, in that metamorphic stage between seed and bloom. And just like a seed in the soil, you’re being tested—pushed and challenged by pressures you don’t fully understand.

The wet and dry cycles of the soil, the bugs picking at the seed, the darkness before breaking through the surface—all of it mirrors the way life tests us.

And yet, we don’t think of our wishes as seeds. We expect to plant a dream and wake up in full bloom. But it doesn’t work that way.

There has to be a transition. And our physical bodies don’t know the way—they rely on cell memory, which clings to old habits and familiar comforts. That’s why metamorphosis always feels like a struggle.

A butterfly fights to break free from its cocoon.A tree looks devastated after a deep pruning.A seed must crack open and push through the soil before it can bloom.

But in the end? It is always worth it.

The Key: Trust the Process, One Moment at a Time

It takes constant reminders to trust that something bigger is coming—especially when everything in your world feels like chaos.

🔹 Stop trying to control exactly what it will be. You planted the seed. You will love what blooms. Trust that.

🔹 Focus on the here and now. Instead of resisting, try moving through each challenge as gracefully as possible.

🔹 Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. A carrot’s growth process is different from a pepper’s. A tree grows differently than a flower. You are growing exactly as you are meant to.

🔹 Listen to your emotions—they are your guidance system. Just like a car’s instrument panel, your emotions are constantly trying to tell you what needs attention.

And most importantly—tune in.

Your Internal Radio: The Power of Stillness

What’s truly amazing? We all have an internal radio.

When we quiet the noise and simply ask—ask for guidance, ask for clarity, ask for the next step—we get answers. But we have to listen.

Regular meditation changes everything. Even in the most excruciatingly difficult times, it makes the struggle bearable. Because you start to understand what’s happening.

And when you understand, you stop fighting against the process. You move through it. And that’s how you arrive at the other side.

A Reminder to Myself (and to You)

As I write this today, I am reminding myself of all of this, too. So, if you are in the thick of it right now, take a deep breath. Look yourself in the mirror and say:

“You’ve got this. This path is 100% unique to you, for you. You can do this. You will do this. And I am proud of you.”

You’ll be surprised how powerful that is. Because self-talk matters. Complaining and negative thoughts only delay your bloom. Each and every one of us is meant to grow, succeed, and bloom in our own way. And when we stop resisting the process, we finally allow ourselves to do just that.

So breathe. Trust. Keep going.

You are becoming something beautiful. 🌱✨
